DeSoto 5th Graders Explore Food Webs Through Owl Pellet Dissection

DeSoto Intermediate 5th grade students had an exciting hands-on learning experience in science this week as they dissected owl pellets as part of their Food Webs Unit!



Students have been learning about producers, consumers, predators, prey, and how energy moves through an ecosystem. During the activity, students carefully dissected owl pellets to discover and identify the bones of animals the owls had eaten.


Using their findings, students determined what types of prey might be part of an owl’s diet and connected those animals to a larger food web. This hands-on investigation gave students a fun and memorable way to apply what they have been learning about ecosystems in the classroom!
