The buildings and grounds department works to ensure that our students, staff members, and visitors enjoy a safe, clean, and welcoming environment to support work and play throughout the district.

  • On July 1, 2022, Iowa House File 2412 was enacted. This law requires radon testing and mitigation in public schools and radon resistant construction techniques used in any new construction projects. 

    This act adds a new section, 280.32 Radon testing and mitigation, to Iowa Code 280, Uniform School Requirements. This code is administered by the Iowa Department of Education.

    This new law requires the school board to establish a radon plan and schedule for testing. It further requires that each attendance center in a school district must be tested for radon at least once prior to July 1, 2027, and at least once every 5 years thereafter. The law also requires the posting of the plan, and test results on the school website. 

     

     

    Testing and Mitigation Plan

     

    To comply with Iowa new law, the ADM School Board will adopt and implement the following plan.

    1. The School Board will appoint the current and/or any future Director of Buildings and Grounds to be in charge of and implement all testing and mitigation necessary to comply with Iowa Code.
    2. ADM Schools will then contract and schedule an outside firm who employs an Iowa Certified Radon Measurement Specialist to complete the required testing.
    3. ADM Schools performed initial testing on the following:
      • Adel Elementary: March 2025
      • Meadow View Elementary: March 2025
      • DeSoto Intermediate: March 2025
      • ADM Middle School: March 2025
      • ADM High School: March 2025
    4. All ADM Schools will be put on a 5 year testing schedule following the initial testing.
      • Adel Elementary: During the 2029-30 school year
      • Meadow View Elementary: During the 2029-30 school year
      • DeSoto Intermediate: During the 2029-30 school year
      • ADM Middle School: During the 2029-30 school year
      • ADM High School: During the 2029-30 school year
    5. ADM Schools will post the plan and all test results on this page of the school website as required by Iowa law.
    6. ADM Schools will follow up on any testing that indicates radon levels above 4 pCi/L by contacting an Iowa credentialed Radon Mitigation Specialist to develop a radon mitigation plan that may include further diagnostic testing, corrective measures, and active mitigation.
      • If mitigation is required, it will be completed within two years of the first test showing elevated radon levels. 
      • ADM Schools will incorporate radon resistant construction techniques into future building projects.
