Ann Heitz is the Special Education Coordinator for ADM Schools who is celebrating 30 years with us this year.  She was born and raised in Dubuque, IA (with a short stint in Elkader).  Ann received her BA in Special Education from University of Northern Iowa and her MA in Special Education from Viterbo University.  Prior to calling ADM home, Ann spent 1 semester at an alternative high school in Dubuque, followed by 1 year in a special education classroom in Monroe, WI.  She taught special education for various locations with ADM for 10 years before moving into her current role of Special Education Instructional Coach and Coordinator 10 years ago.

When Ann began her college studies, she didn’t have teaching in mind.  She started her first year at UNI as a marketing major, but she revamped her choice after freshman year when she went home for her summer job, working/volunteering at a residential facility for teens and adults with cognitive disabilities.  Ann’s goals shifted after this experience, and when she recalled wanting to change majors, Ann shared, “Every time I described what I wanted to do, my academic counselor told me, ‘Ann, that’s teaching!’ (even though I insisted it was not).”  

Ann chose ADM because her husband, Eric, was teaching here and they felt much more at home in Adel than in Wisconsin.  She stays with ADM because of the people.  Ann feels that ADM (as a school district and a community) is and will always be her home.  

What Ann loves most about her role is that she gets to work with all of the talented staff throughout the district, and she doesn’t have to say goodbye to students or families as they move on to other buildings/grade levels. 

Outside of school, Ann enjoys creating all things for her people (baking, cooking, sewing, refinishing, etc.)
