In February, DeSoto Intermediate fourth graders completed a Great Depression unit with the compelling question of “How Do People Overcome Hardships?” After learning about history, they connected their new content knowledge to their present day lives. Students then brainstormed how people face hardships today and decided to take informed action to help their community by sending Valentine’s Day cards to local nursing homes and children’s hospitals, adding special treats and notes to weekend meals, donating books and bookmarks to community libraries, and supporting our local food bank.  DI’s 4th grade students not only realized that giving is a good thing to do to be a good citizen/human, but also that it is just good for the soul!
