Special Education and Intervention

Alisha Parmerlee, ELL

I began teaching at ADM in 2017.  I have been teaching ESL since 2008 at all different levels K-12.  I earned my TESOL degree from the University of Northern Iowa along with my reading endorsement.  I have my masters from Viterbo University with my reading specialist degree. I also have a second degree in elementary education.  I love to read and learn!  I also love to spend time with my family and kids at home.  My hobbies include volunteering with area refugees and inner city youth, running and traveling!

Karla Courtney, Title I Reading

I graduated from The University of Northern Iowa in 2001 with a degree in elementary education, a mathematics teaching minor, and a reading endorsement.  In 2008, I earned my master’s degree from Viterbo University.  My teaching career began at DeSoto intermediate in 2002.  I have taught fourth grade, fifth grade, and now Title I Reading intervention.  In my free time I enjoy reading, spoiling my nieces and nephew, shopping, and volunteering.

Abbie Mahoney, Special Education

I was born and raised in Emmetsburg, a small town in northwest Iowa. In 2009, I received my degree in Elementary Education, along with endorsements in Special Education and Reading, from the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!) In 2010, I began teaching special education at DeSoto Intermediate. I obtained my master’s of education degree and consultant endorsement from Morningside College. My husband, Eric, and I live in Waukee with our very playful and energetic “puppy”, Luca. We are expecting a baby girl in September. In my free time I enjoy reading, spending time with family and friends and attending Hawkeye sporting events.

Rebecca Olson, Special Education

My childhood was spent climbing hay bales and playing in puddles on a farm outside of Carlisle.  I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and earned my Master’s degree from Morningside College.  My first teaching position was at Adel Elementary in an Early Childhood Special Education position.  Being a stay-at-home mom for 7 years with my three wonderful children was my best decision ever.  I returned to teaching full-time at ADM in 2006.  In my free time, I love reading, traveling, and spending time with my family.

My husband, Aaron and I live in the area and we are excited for our toddler, Oaklan to be an ADM Tiger! In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, playing with my son, quilting, and traveling.
