I grew up in southeast Iowa in Eddyville but left the state (and broke my father’s heart) to go to the University of Missouri to attend the world’s number one journalism program. I graduated from there in 2002 with a Bachelor of Journalism, News Editorial and then traveled farther south to Pensacola, Florida. I worked at the local paper – The Pensacola News Journal – for four years as a copy editor and page designer before I realized I needed a career change. I went in to journalism to try to help make the world a better place, and I no longer felt that was working and looked for a career that would help me move back to my original goal. After much soul searching, I decided teaching would be the best choice for this. I taught sixth grade reading for two years in the Escambia (Florida) County School District. But in 2008, my husband and I decided to move back to Iowa. I subbed in the West Des Moines and Waukee school districts for two years before being hired at ADM for ninth grade English in 2010. During this time, I also earned my master of education with a focus in literacy education from Mizzou. In my free time, I enjoy running , traveling, reading, knitting, and spoiling my nieces and nephews. I’m also an avid Mizzou Tigers and New Orleans Saints fan. I live in Waukee with my husband, Jeremy, and our dog and two cats.
