On Tuesday, November 5th, the Human Body Systems class at the high school attended a hands-on workshop at Des Moines University called “Get Your Foot in the Door.”  Students learned about the ins and outs of podiatric medicine from DMU students. The day consisted of hands-on activities where students got to learn about and practice tasks that a podiatrist would do on a day to day basis.  Students got to practice sutures on pig feet, use ultrasound machines, cast their feet as they would when fitting a patient for orthotics, and practice the process of sterilizing and gowning for surgery. It was a day filled with fun and learning and left students with some ideas about potential future medical careers.
